Welcome to Maple Farm Sanctuary's
Newsletter
Thank-you for the Dedicated
Help!
This year has been quite a
rough time for MFS. In June 2010 volunteers were called upon to help
more with chores and food preparation. I can’t begin the list of all the
volunteers names for fear of leaving a critical name out! More
volunteers came forward and were, in turn, trained by some of the
existing volunteers.
There’s still much work to continue with before winter settles in. We
have a few who are ready and waiting to start on these projects but will
welcome others who think they can help with this type of work. Max’s new
barn needs some unexpected landscaping done along with the fencing. The
goat barn just received more fence to increase the yard area.
The call-to-arms for all of the help was the knee replacement that I had
done in November of last year, got horribly infected and I almost lost
my leg. It’s been an extremely painful summer but I have only one more
surgery to go, October 20th…and the road to recovery will be here!
So, to all of the wonderful volunteers who have scooped poop, cared for
animals, prepared fruits, and even cooked for Jim and me we thank-you
tenfold! Our hearts are touched to have such wonderful people stick by
us during these rough times.

Fall Fundraiser Update - 2010
By Cheri Ezell-Vandersluis
Co-founder of Maple Farm Sanctuary
There have been some
gorgeous weekends so far this early fall and we had hoped to have our
annual fund raiser to enjoy the animals, listen to a speaker, enjoy good
vegan food, admire Max’s new barn along with showing appreciation to
Fran, Max’s master builder with his volunteers and meeting new people.
Unfortunately, my knee and all the recovery that goes with it, took
priority. We’re so sorry to those who were looking forward to our get
together but we have high hopes for next years’ open house.
In the meantime, we desperately need funds to make it through the
approaching winter. Building repairs, vehicle maintenance, more bedding
shipments for those cold winter nights, and, because of the drought
later this season, we’ll need to buy some hay. Any donations to support
the animals and their homes will be deeply appreciated.

The Horses are
Off
to Wonderful Homes!
By Cheri Ezell-Vandersluis
Co-founder of Maple Farm Sanctuary
In August of 2010 several women came to us inquiring about our horses.
We’ve been hoping to adopt them for many years but with the economy
being what it is we’ve had to be very careful who shows their intentions
toward adopting. Some horses have been known to be picked up by
unknowing owners, believing a loving home awaited their horse(s).
Unfortunately, livestock dealers often pick up the horses and after
collecting enough for a shipment the poor equines are shipped to either
Canada or Mexico only to be slaughtered and butchered for shipment
mostly to Europe where that meat is a delicacy.
The MFS horses, Christie, Stjarna, Tori and Ivan, went to wonderful new
homes in PA (3) and NY (1). We’ve received frequent updates letting us
know how the new home adjustments were going. So far all four have
quickly adjusted to their new surroundings. They are deeply missed but
they have now made room for future emergencies.

Thank you Pet Rock Festival!
Special
thanks to Pet Rock and everyone who visited the MFS table
in September 2010 at the 12th Annual
Pet Rock Festival
Pet Rock is the largest animal expo on the East Coast. A daylong
festival of fundraising fun for the entire family, including your dog,
Pet Rock’s primary purpose is to promote responsible pet ownership,
bring attention to animal cruelty and educate humans on a variety of
animal related issues. Proceeds benefitted New England animal
welfare organizations.
