Smooch

Smooch

Several years ago, a group of volunteers from a local farming program at a boy’s school contacted MFS about their concerns about the program. They told us that many of the animals at the farm were neglected and badly cared for, including pregnant goats who were forced to give birth outside in the winter and lost their babies to frostbite.

In particular, the volunteers were concerned about Goldilocks, a small Nigerian Dwarf goat who had been bred with a Nubian male, a much larger goat breed, and was pregnant with several babies.

MFS was able to successfully remove Goldilocks from the farm and bring her to our sanctuary, but she was already quite sick from her stressful pregnancy. When Goldilocks went into labor, Cheri had to help pull her babies out and feared that they would not survive. Sadly, three of Goldilock’s babies were stillborn, and the fourth was barely breathing. However, with Cheri’s care, the little baby, later named Smooch, pulled through, and Goldilocks was finally able to nurse and raise her first kid.

Smooch and Goldilocks were inseparable until Goldilocks passed away from illness associated with old age. Smooch lives in our small goat barn and can usually be seen hanging out with Mercy as well as Wynvisa and her kids Sage and Olaf.

After a period of declining health, Smooch passed away in early 2021. Her sweet spirit will be missed.
